The concern assembled the 1.6-liter diesel engine Volkswagen JK 1.6 D from 1980 to 1989 and installed it on models that were popular at the time: the second Passat and the similar Audi 80 B2. This atmospheric diesel had a phlegmatic character, but it had a good resource.

The EA086 series also includes: JK, JP, JX, SB, 1X, 1Y, AAZ, ABL.

Disadvantages of the VW JK engine
- This diesel engine has a sedate character, is noisy and does not like frost;
- Due to overheating, the cylinder head quickly cracks, but small cracks do not affect the ride;
- The high pressure fuel pump often leaks over the gaskets, keep an eye on it;
- The timing belt resource according to the regulations is 60,000 km, and when it breaks, the valves bend;
- At high mileage, such power units are prone to oil burns and lubrication leaks.
