The 1.3-liter Toyota 1NR-FE engine has been assembled since 2008 and only in Japanese factories. The motor is available in two versions: for developing countries EURO 3 and for other EURO 4/5. There is also a modification for bioethanol 1NR-FBE, and two more Chinese 4NR-FE and 6NR-FE.

The NR family includes engines: 3NR‑FE, 8NR‑FTS, 1NR‑FE, 1NR‑VE, 1NR‑FKE, 2NR‑FE, 2NR‑VE, 2NR‑FKE.
The engine was installed on:
- Toyota Auris E150 in 2008 – 2012; Auris E180 since 2012;
- Toyota Corolla E150 in 2009 – 2013; Corolla E160 since 2012; Corolla E180 since 2013;
- Toyota iQ GJ10 in 2008 – 2015;
- Toyota Ractis NCP120 in 2010 – 2017;
- Toyota Urban Cruiser XP110 in 2009 – 2016;
- Toyota Yaris XP90 in 2008 – 2011; Yaris XP130 since 2011;
- Daihatsu Boon in 2010 – 2016;
- Aston Martin Cygnet in 2011 – 2013.

Disadvantages of the 1NR-FE engine
- A number of owners claim a small oil burner that grows with mileage;
- A modest resource has individual ignition coils and a water pump;
- Due to the fault of the EGR valve, the power unit is prone to the rapid formation of carbon deposits;
- Many complain about extraneous sounds in the operation of the motor, especially from VVT clutches.
